WHERE TO VISIT ?

According to the famous traveler-historian-philosopher Herodotus*, ancient Halicarnassus was founded in an area called Caria by Dorians who mixed with the native populations called Lelegians and Carians. With Cnidus, Cos on the island of the same name, Camirus, Lalysus and Lindus on Rhodes Island, Halicarnassus belonged to the Dorian confederacy. In the middle of the 6C BC, Halicarnassus came under Persian domination but was ruled through native tyrants (the first one was Lygdamos) centered in Mylasa. His daughter, Queen Artemisia I, backed Xerxes during his expedition against Greece but they were defeated in the Salamis Naval Battle (480 BC) and as a result, Halicarnassus came under the domination of the Athenians. In 386 BC, following a peace agreement, Caria came again under Persian control and was put under the administration of an old Carian dynasty, who lived in Mylasa.

WHERE TO VISIT ?

The town of Beypazari is located about 1.5 hours west of Ankara in the Inozu Valley where the town is divided into two settlement areas, the old and the new.

The older sections of the town are situated in the northern part of the old Istanbul highway, along the deep slopes of the mountains and in valleys while the new section is situated on the plains to the south of the old highway. If you have your own transportation you may reach Beypazari from Istanbul in about 7 hours, or you may go by bus to Ankara and then to Beypazari. There are no direct bus connections from Istanbul. There is accommodation in Beypazari in the form of restored Ottoman houses and modest hotels.
Beypazari is situated on the historical Silk Road, and there are about 3000 existing wooden houses in the town. There has been great effort on the part of the municipality to restore more and more of these beautiful old houses, many of which are quite large.

The houses, which are usually 3-stories high, were built with the same materials as other traditional Turkish houses. The ground floor is faced with flat stones. Stables, sheds, storerooms, and pantries are usually on the ground floor. Just above the ground floor there are cupboards and a kitchen used in the winter. The upper floors are the most frequently used areas.

In the outer, inner or middle areas, there is the Turkish "sofa" (hall anteroom). The bedrooms, toilets and kitchens are situated around the sofa. You also find the "haremlik" (quarters for women) and "selamlik" (quarters for men) on the second floor. According to the Beypazari custom, an architectural element on the upper floors of these houses is left incomplete during the owner's lifetime. These elements are called "Canti" or "Candi" in the local dialect.

These features are finished when needed. Beypazari houses have a sofa on the middle floor, which sometimes opens out to a balcony. The middle floors have large, arched windows that allow light to enter. The old streets of Beypazari are narrow, usually 3 to 6 meters wide and are lined with houses and garden walls on both sides.

The old streets, marketplace and the neighborhoods of Beypazari are traditional.

The shops, which are generally one story, are used as workshops where coppersmiths, silversmiths and bronze smiths work metals into beautiful artifacts.

There are also carpenters, saddle-makers and shoemakers here and you can see artisans hand-sewing bed coverlets, weaving rag-rugs and silk tablecloths.

Beypazari is also famous for its cuisine such as the delicious buttery dry bread crusts, carrot Turkish delight, and thin stuffed grape leaves as well as meat dishes.

Hillsdale High School

From its inception, Hillsdale has been committed to providing an environment that welcomes and challenges every person, students and staff alike, to learn and grow. Hillsdale has undergone major changes over the past several years as its staff strives to increase achievement and equity for all of its students.
Ciclk To
With the assistance of a $500,000 Small Learning Community (SLC) implementation grant in 2003 and a second $1.1 million grant in 2007 to further our work, Hillsdale has become a national model for comprehensive high school reform. Teams of four core academic teachers at the 9th and 10th grades share groups of approximately 100 students and continue teaching and supporting these students for at least their first two years. Similarly, teams of two to four core teachers share students in the 11th and 12th grades. Each core teacher also serves as an advisor to approximately 27 of the students enrolled in his or her house.

Following in the spirit of our ESLRs and the school’s vision of high achievement for all students, rigor and relevance play a key role in the development of curriculum and instruction at Hillsdale. In 1997, Hillsdale began a Senior Exhibition program that requires all seniors to define an essential question, write a 15+ page thesis, and defend the thesis to a panel of graders. The Senior Exhibition has been a catalyst for change in other curricular areas, including a junior project, the American Promise, as well as school-wide projects at the 9th and 10th grade levels. Integrated, differentiated, rubric-based curriculum is the norm in many subject areas.

Thunder Hole Maine

Here’s a breaking news that’s happening at Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park, Maine reported by WIFR:
The U.S. Coast Guard says three people have been rescued after being swept out to sea by a rogue wave from Hurricane Bill at a park in Maine.
Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Shane Coxon says a man, a woman and a 7-year-old girl were pulled from the water Sunday at Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park. Coxon says other people are believed to be still lost in the waves but did not know how many. The National Park Service had said earlier Sunday that at least three people were missing. Coast Guard helicopters and rescue boats have been conducting searches.

Coxon says the girl was unresponsive when she was rescued, the woman appeared to have a broken leg and the man had a previous heart condition that appeared to be acting up.
The statement “a rogue wave from Hurricane Bill” may be a little on the broad and subjective side. Until more detail information becomes available, let’s pray for the best and safer outcome for all the people involved.
